Cervical Cancer | HPV Screening

Bridging the gap in Cervical Cancer Care

HopeScan Initiative is working alongside leading clinical and local healthcare partners in Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria to expand access to cervical cancer education, screening and treatment for women who are often underserved.

Osogbo is a growing city in southwestern Nigeria and home to many women who face limited access to cervical cancer screening and preventive healthcare services.

Project Overview & Impact

  • The Challenge: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in Nigeria, yet screening coverage remains alarmingly low (<5%).
  • Community-anchored screening: Deploys high-sensitivity HPV DNA genotyping to provide accurate screening for 1,000 women ages 25–49 in Osogbo LGA. The program will also include HPV vaccination awareness for ages 9–15, with vaccination for opt-ins.
  • Closing the referral gap: Integrates point-of-care diagnostics with a digital patient navigation system to ensure transition from diagnosis to definitive clinical management.
  • Location: Osogbo LGA, Osun State, Nigeria

Expanding access to breast cancer screening & care

Project Overview & Impact

The goal: Expand access to breast cancer screening and care in two local areas of Osun State, Nigeria.

  • Early Diagnosis: Comprehensive program studying the implementation of early breast cancer diagnosis, aligned with WHO and NICE frameworks.
  • Awareness & Navigation: Aims to boost public awareness of breast cancer symptoms and evaluate a digital patient navigation system.
  • Referrals & Survival: Focused on improving clinical survival rates, reducing delays in care, and strengthening referral pathway systems for definitive treatment.
  • Location: Ife East & Ife Central LGA, Osun State, Nigeria (population ~350,000)

A comprehensive community-based program to screen men and women for breast, cervical, and prostate cancers.

Project Overview & Impact

The goal: Promote early detection, increase awareness, and improve health outcomes within the local population of Eti-Osa LGA, Lagos State, Nigeria.

  • Breast Cancer: Women aged 40–70 years.
  • Cervical Cancer: Women aged 21–65 years.
  • Prostate Cancer: Men aged 45 years and above.
  • Location: Eti-Osa LGA, Lagos State, Nigeria

Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening

  • Goal:  Structured continuum-of-care model for prostate cancer patients:
       Screening – Diagnosis – Navigation – Treatment options – Follow-up
  • Program Description:
    Demography: Women ages 25 – 74 yr old

    Tests:
    Breast: Clinical Breast Exam (CBE), ultrasound, Mammography, breast biopsy
    Cervix: Pap smear, HPV DNA test, Visual inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA), cervical biopsy.

  • Post-diagnosis clinically-anchored within MEDHEF hospital system – chemotherapy services + referral for radiotherapy (affiliated institutions).
  • Outcomes & impact measurements
     Screening uptake in target population.
     Rate of follow-up after abnormal result.
     Time from screening to diagnostic confirmation.
     Barriers to completing referral and treatment.

Prostate Cancer Screening
