Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening

Project: Test Ikorodu™ – a Pilot program for early detection screening of patients in Ikorodu LGA.

Location: Ikorodu LGA, Lagos, Nigeria
Partner: Dr. Ayo Godwin Michael, Founder & Executive Director, Medical Health Network (MEDHEF) The program establishes a structured continuum‑of‑care model for women ages 25 to 74, guiding patients through screening, diagnosis, navigation, treatment options, and follow‑up for breast and cervical cancer. Screening services include Clinical Breast Exams (CBE), ultrasound, mammography, and breast biopsy, alongside Pap smears, HPV DNA testing, Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA), and cervical biopsy. All post‑diagnosis care is clinically anchored within the MEDHEF hospital system, which provides chemotherapy services and coordinated referrals to affiliated radiotherapy centers. Program impact will be assessed through screening uptake in the target population, follow‑up rates after abnormal results, time from screening to diagnostic confirmation, and identification of barriers that hinder completion of referral or treatment pathways.

Partner: Dr. Ayo Godwin Michael, Founder & Executive Director, Medical Health Network (MEDHEF) The Medical Health Foundation (MEDHEF) is partnering to implement a structured continuum‑of‑care model for men aged 40 and older at risk for prostate cancer, guiding patients from screening through diagnosis, navigation, treatment, and follow‑up. The program offers PSA testing, Digital Rectal Exams (DRE), transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), and prostate biopsy, with all post‑diagnosis care anchored within the MEDHEF hospital system, including chemotherapy services and referrals to affiliated radiotherapy centers. Impact will be measured through screening uptake in the target population, follow‑up rates after abnormal results, time from initial screening to diagnostic confirmation, and identification of barriers that prevent patients from completing referral or treatment pathways.

The program is designed to expand access to preventive cancer screening for FMC patients and surrounding communities, advancing FMC’s public health and outreach goals while increasing awareness of the importance of early detection. Serving urban and peri‑urban populations—particularly poor and underserved groups across the mainland region—the initiative provides breast and prostate cancer screening and early‑detection services. By strengthening community engagement and reducing barriers to care, the program aims to improve screening participation, support timely follow‑up, and reinforce FMC’s role as a trusted anchor for preventive health.

Project: Expanding access to new HPV screening for cervical cancer in rural Nigeria

Location: Osun State, Nigeria
Partner: Professor Kayode Ajenifuja & Dr. Akinfolarin Adepiti, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, OAUTH, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria.
Cervical cancer remains the second most common cancer among women in Nigeria, yet screening coverage remains alarmingly low (<5%). While HPV vaccination is a critical long-term tool, it does not cover all oncogenic subtypes, remains inaccessible in rural regions, and does not mitigate risk for women in the 25 - 45 age cohort. This pilot project deploys a community-anchored model utilizing high-sensitivity HPV DNA genotyping to provide expanded coverage and accurate screening for 1,000 women in two rural towns in Osun State. By integrating point-of-care diagnostics with a digital patient navigation system, this initiative closes the "referral gap," ensuring that every high-risk woman identified is transitioned from screening to definitive clinical management.
