Alwell Nwankwoala, Ph.D

Dr. Alwell Nwankwoala is a seasoned pharmaceutical scientist and regulatory expert with more than 15 years of technical leadership in drug development, analytical chemistry, and quality assessment. He currently serves as a Drug Product CMC Reviewer at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where he evaluates the safety, quality, and manufacturing rigor of drug product applications. His career spans industry, academia, and government, bringing a rare blend of scientific depth, regulatory insight, and real-world development experience to HopeScan’s Board.

Prior to joining the FDA, Alwell spent 18 years as a Principal and Senior Research Scientist in Analytical Research and Product Development at leading pharmaceutical companies, including Novartis, supporting both New Drug Applications (NDAs) and Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDAs) and contributing to the advancement of innovative and  generic medicines.  He has held multiple academic and research appointments, including Assistant Professor of Environmental/Analytical Chemistry at the State University of New York, Purchase; Assistant Research Professor at the U.S. Department of Energy Center of Excellence in Environmental Engineering at Tuskegee University; and Visiting Research Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he contributed to the Molten Salt Reactor Remediation Project.
Dr. Alwell Nwankwoala also led a NASA-funded research program focused on jet fuel–contaminated wastewater remediation and has taught environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, and chemical instrumentation as an adjunct professor at Manhattanville College and Pace University.

Following his PhD, Dr. Nwankwoala completed a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship at the Environmental Aerosol Laboratory at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia, where he conducted research on secondary aerosol formation and particulate emissions from diesel-powered vehicles. He holds a PhD in Analytical/Environmental Chemistry from the Australian National University (Canberra), an MS in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and a BS in Chemistry (with minors in Physics and Mathematics) from the University of Ife (Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife, Nigeria. 

Dr. Nwankwoala is a member of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) and the American Chemical Society (ACS), has authored more than 10 peer-reviewed publications, and has delivered numerous conference presentations throughout his career. He is deeply aligned with HopeScan’s vision to expand early cancer detection and treatment access across Africa, and his expertise and conviction reinforce his belief that this work is timely, impactful, and essential to saving lives.
